Privacy Policy

1. Our Approach to Privacy

FamYarn is a service operated by DSR Media LLC. “FamYarn” is a registered fictitious name (DBA) of DSR Media LLC. In this policy, “FamYarn,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to DSR Media LLC.

FamYarn is designed to help families preserve and share their history with care and respect. We prioritize privacy, user control, and transparency.

Your family data is private by default and only shared when you choose.

2. Information We Collect

Account Information

  • Phone number (optional — used only if you opt in to SMS text notifications)
  • Authentication credentials

Tree Data

  • Individuals (living/deceased)
  • Events, relationships
  • Media, notes, citations

Collaboration Data

3. How We Use Information

We use analytics tools (see Section 9) for product improvement. We do not use data for cross-context behavioral advertising.

4. Sharing

Service Providers

Used for infrastructure, analytics, email, billing.

Only via valid legal process.

5. Living vs Deceased

A person is considered deceased based on available data (e.g., a recorded death event, or a birth year more than 120 years ago). Users must correct data if inaccurate. Living individuals are never included in public shares.

6. Contributions

Tree data is collaborative. Users are responsible for:

  • Accuracy
  • Privacy of living individuals
  • Rights to upload content

7. Deletion & Retention

Account Data

Deleted or de-identified.

Tree Data

Remains if shared; attribution removed.

Media

Remains attached to tree.

Timing

45 days (up to 90 if needed)

Logs

Retained up to 60 days.

8. Data Access

Users may request exports (e.g., GEDCOM). Processed within 45–90 days.

9. Cookies, Analytics & Online Identifiers

We and our analytics providers use cookies, similar technologies, and online identifiers (such as a randomly generated, pseudonymous analytics ID) to operate the service (for example, to keep you signed in) and to understand how it is used so we can improve it.

Analytics providers. We use Google Analytics and Matomo to measure and analyze usage. These tools collect information such as pages viewed, actions taken, device and browser information, and IP address, and set or read a pseudonymous analytics identifier for your browser. Google Analytics is provided by Google; see how Google uses this data at policies.google.com/technologies/partners. You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Linking analytics to your account. To understand how features are used and how people complete key actions (creating a tree, sending or accepting an invitation, subscribing), we may associate these analytics identifiers and the related usage/visitation information with your account and activity, including events we record on our own servers. We share only pseudonymous identifiers and event information with these providers — never your name, email, phone number, or family-tree content.

Do Not Track / Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we honor it: we stop sending any data to Google Analytics, switch our own (Matomo) analytics to a cookieless mode that measures usage only in aggregate without identifying you, and we do not link analytics to your account.

No advertising, no sale. We do not use analytics data for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not sell your personal information.

10. Communications

Essential emails required. Other emails are opt-in.

11. SMS & Text Messaging

If you provide a mobile phone number and opt in, FamYarn may send you SMS text messages. Providing a phone number and opting in to texts is always optional and is never a condition of using the service.

Types of messages. Depending on the opt-ins you choose, texts may include account and billing notifications (for example, payment or plan-status alerts, referral activity, and tree-invitation or account-activity notices) and, only if you separately opt in, promotional or marketing messages about new features and offers.

Message frequency varies based on your account activity and the notifications you have enabled.

Message and data rates may apply. These charges come from your mobile carrier and are your responsibility.

How to opt out. You can cancel SMS messages at any time by replying STOP to any message. After you send STOP, we will send one confirmation message and then stop sending you texts. Reply HELP for help, or contact us at support@famyarn.com.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. We do not sell, rent, or share your mobile phone number or your SMS opt-in and consent information with any third party for their own marketing. Phone numbers and message content are shared only with the messaging service providers (such as our SMS carrier and messaging aggregator) strictly as needed to deliver the messages you have requested, and text-messaging opt-in data and consent are excluded from all other data-sharing described in this policy.

12. Children

Users must be 13+. Genealogical data may include minors.

13. Security

We use reasonable safeguards including encryption. No system is perfectly secure.

14. Inactive Accounts

Accounts inactive for 3 years may be removed.

15. Do Not Sell or Share

We do not sell data. We do not share data for advertising unless users opt in; this advertising opt-in never applies to your mobile information or SMS consent data. FamYarn does not share your mobile information or SMS consent with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.

We may update this policy and notify users.
